Abu Dhabi offers opportunities for entrepreneurs providing interior design, space-planning, fit-out design and related professional services. Interior design businesses can work on residential properties, offices, hospitality projects, retail spaces and other commercial developments.

However, starting an interior design company involves more than registering a business name. Entrepreneurs need to select the correct professional activity, establish the company under an appropriate legal structure, obtain the required economic licence and, where the services fall within Abu Dhabi's regulated engineering framework, complete the relevant professional registration and classification requirements. ADDED identifies business activity, legal form, trade name, initial approval, premises and additional approvals as key stages of establishing a business.

Choose the Right Interior Design Activity

The first step is to clearly define the services the company will provide.

Depending on the business model, these may include:

● Interior design consultancy

● Interior space planning

● Residential interior design

● Commercial interior design

● Hospitality interior design

● Office interior design

● Interior decoration

● Design consultancy

● Architectural and interior design services

The exact activity should match the services that the company intends to provide. Abu Dhabi's DMT classification system currently includes Engineering Consulting in Interior Design as a specific regulated activity, demonstrating that some interior-design services fall within the engineering consultancy framework.

Therefore, entrepreneurs should determine whether their planned services require an engineering consultancy classification rather than assuming that every interior-design business follows the same licensing route.

Select the Legal Structure

After determining the business activity, choose a suitable legal form based on the ownership and nature of the company.

Possible structures can include an LLC and other permitted legal forms. ADDED states that the legal form should be selected according to the business activity and ownership structure.

The chosen structure will affect the company's incorporation documents and licensing process.

Reserve Your Trade Name

The next step is to select an appropriate trade name and register it with the relevant Abu Dhabi authority.

The name should comply with applicable requirements and be available for registration. Trade-name reservation is one of ADDED's primary economic licensing services.

For an interior design company, a professional and distinctive name can also help establish the company's identity when presenting design portfolios and proposals to clients.

Obtain Initial Approval and the Economic Licence

Once the activity, legal structure and trade name are determined, the company can proceed with the initial approval and licensing process.

The general process includes:

● Selecting the business activity

● Choosing the legal form

● Reserving the trade name

● Obtaining initial approval

● Preparing contractual documents where required

● Securing a suitable business location

● Obtaining additional approvals where applicable

● Submitting the required documents

● Paying the applicable fees

● Obtaining the final economic licence

ADDED describes an economic licence as the certificate that allows a business to practise a specific economic activity after meeting the applicable legal requirements.

Set Up a Suitable Office

An interior design company normally needs an appropriate professional workspace for meetings, design work, client presentations and administration.

Before signing a tenancy contract, entrepreneurs should confirm that the premises are suitable for the selected activity. ADDED's setup process requires businesses operating from physical premises to identify a suitable location, verify the requirements and obtain a tenancy contract.

The office can also be planned to accommodate design software, material samples, drawings, client presentations and project documentation.

Check Whether DMT Registration Is Required

This is an important consideration for an interior design company in Abu Dhabi.

DMT's current engineering classification system includes Engineering Consulting in Interior Design as a specific activity. Existing engineering consultancy firms in Abu Dhabi are listed with this activity alongside their applicable classification categories.

If the company's proposed services fall under this regulated engineering activity, the business may need to establish an engineering-firm record and comply with the applicable DMT professional registration and classification requirements.

The exact requirements should therefore be confirmed based on the activities that will appear on the company's licence.

Complete Engineering Firm Classification Where Applicable

Where the business operates as a regulated engineering consultancy, company formation alone may not be sufficient.

DMT provides a classification system for engineering firms and allows requirements to be determined according to the firm's type, activity and desired classification category.

Current DMT records show interior-design engineering consultancy activities held by firms under different classification categories, demonstrating that the requirements can vary according to the firm's classification.

Build the Right Professional Team

The staffing requirements depend on the services the company intends to offer.

A business providing regulated engineering consultancy services may need appropriately qualified and registered professionals, while a design-focused business operating under a different permitted activity may have different requirements.

If the company is pursuing engineering consultancy classification, its technical team should be planned around the applicable DMT requirements rather than simply hiring designers after the company has been established.

Consider ADGM as an Alternative Setup Route

Entrepreneurs may also consider Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) depending on the nature and location of the business.

In March 2026, DMT and ADGM integrated their systems for engineering-firm and professional classification, allowing ADGM-licensed engineering firms and professionals to work across Abu Dhabi under the unified framework.

This is particularly relevant for an interior design company that intends to operate as a regulated engineering consultancy and is considering an ADGM structure.

Prepare Your Portfolio and Business Documents

Although a portfolio is not the same as a government approval, it is an important part of establishing an interior design business commercially.

Before approaching clients, the company should prepare:

● Interior design portfolio

● Company profile

● Service descriptions

● Design packages

● Project proposal templates

● Quotations

● Contracts

● Client presentation materials

● Design software and technical resources

A strong portfolio can help demonstrate the company's design capabilities when approaching property owners, developers and corporate clients.

How Much Does It Cost to Start an Interior Design Company in Abu Dhabi?

There is no single fixed startup cost because the investment depends on the business structure, activities and professional requirements.

Typical expenses may include:

● Economic licence fees

● Trade-name and company formation costs

● Office rent

● Tenancy-related costs

● DMT registration and classification, where applicable

● Professional registration

● Design software

● Computers and office equipment

● Staff salaries

● Professional insurance

● Marketing and branding

● Working capital

A small design consultancy and a larger engineering-based interior design practice can therefore have very different startup budgets.

Conclusion

Starting an interior design company in Abu Dhabi involves both business and professional considerations. Entrepreneurs first need to determine the exact services they will provide, select the appropriate activity and legal structure, reserve a trade name and obtain the relevant economic licence.

An important distinction is whether the proposed services are simply design-related or fall within Abu Dhabi's regulated engineering consultancy activities. DMT currently lists Engineering Consulting in Interior Design as a specific activity, and engineering firms undertaking such activities can be subject to registration and classification requirements.

Understanding this distinction before establishing the company can help entrepreneurs choose the correct licensing route and plan their professional team, office and operational requirements accordingly.
